DEFENDER Jake Wannell is set to exit the Bob Lucas Stadium in a bid to play his football Down Under in the New Year.

The former Exeter City youngster, who was released by the Grecians in May before signing for the Terras on non-contract terms in the summer, has had two offers to join up with clubs in Australia.

He is set to feature for Weymouth on New Year’s Day against Truro City, but jets off in early January.

Commenting on the full-back’s time at the club, boss Jason Matt-hews told Echosport: “I think that Jake has been fantastic, particularly over the last six weeks, and the penny has dropped with him after coming out of full-time football.

“He has been offered a contract from two clubs in Australia, he needs to get himself out there.

“He will go out there to enjoy himself after being a pro. He goes with our best wishes and we hope to see him back soon.

“Jake is a fantastic lad, he is great to have around the dressing room.

“He will be sorely missed by me and I thank him for his efforts tremendously.

Weymouth Football Club will always leave the door open for Jake, he knows that as long as I’m here the door is open for him.”

On bringing in a replacement for Wannell, the Terras’ boss added: “It gives us food for thought and I have spoken to a couple of left-backs that are available at the moment.

"In saying that, Jordan Copp has been fantastic as well when he has played at left-back so it’s all about keeping the squad right.”
