INJURY prevented Jason Matthews taking his place in goal against Arlesey Town at the weekend, but the Terras’ boss valued seeing his side from a different perspective.

While the Weymouth player-manager – still in his first full season at the helm – was frustrated that he was unable to don the gloves and fulfil his usual role, he believed he learnt some priceless lessons about his charges from the touchline.

Buoyed by the 1-0 victory, he told Echosport: “It’s frustrating not to be out there but it was quite nice to not be doing two jobs.

“Sometimes your mind is racing when you play as well, and it was nice to take a step back and look at things from a different perspective.

“I felt that I learnt a few things which I am pleased about and, on the whole, I was pleased with everyone that was there.

“It was also nice to take Craig's (Laird) perspective on things while a game was going on as well, it adds to our bond and that is important.

“I could see a few different things and put my slant on what I think we needed to do substitution wise.”

A replacement Matthews did make was to give full-back Ashley Wells a return to action following his lengthy suspension, with the defender replacing Callum Laird for the latter stages against the Blues.

“We felt that Callum was tiring late on and he hasn’t played too much football at this level this season,” the Terras’ chief added.

“But it was nice to get Ash on for around 15 minutes, and we can break a few of the lads back in gently rather than having to throw them straight in at the deep end.”

Matthews also revealed the latest on the injury that kept influential midfielder Chris McPhee out of action at the weekend.

He added: “Chris’s back is very sore and we will have to monitor it throughout the week. He is hoping to get a referral on it this week as well.”

The Weymouth FC Travel Club are running a coach for the Terras' clash against Paulton Rovers on Saturday, leaving the Bob Lucas Stadium at 11am (£10).
