TERRAS’ goalkeeping coach Paul Maitland fully trusts boss Jason Matthews to do “what he thinks is best for the club” in his decision over playing in goal full-time next season.

In an interview with Echosport earlier this week, player-manager Matthews insisted his future in keeping the number one jersey was about “working the budget in the best way”.

Maitland has echoed that thought, insisting a gloveman of Matthews’ calibre will be tough to find for a wage that suits the club’s budget.

Asked for his thoughts on Matthews’ position as the Terras’ number one for next term, Maitland told Echosport: “It’s a really difficult one because I understand people’s views that, if he’s going to manage, then maybe he should be doing that 100 per cent.

“But I still feel he is good enough (as a goalkeeper). His kicking has been a concern and he would admit that himself – it’s not always been the strongest part of his game anyway.

“You have to look at his all-round game and his all-round game is decent.”

He added: “To replace a goalkeeper of his magnitude, you are going to spend a considerable amount of money.

“Our defensive record was pretty good this season and what I would say to anybody is that ‘is the back end what we really need to be concerning ourselves with? Or is it more the front end of the pitch?’.

“Obviously we did sign Jordan Seabright until the end of the season and that was on more of a backup basis. That isn’t dead in the water by any stretch but, because of his work commitments, we are not sure what his commitment level could be.

“We have also spoken to another keeper from within our league who has shown an interest.

There is potential that we could talk to him again and see what package he is looking for.

“If the right person comes along at the right money, then potentially we would look to do it but I don’t necessarily buy into the fact that Jason needs to not be playing for us to be successful.

“I trust that he will do what he thinks is best for the club and best for him as well.”
