WEYMOUTH 2

Shephard 22, Fleetwood 63

POOLE TOWN 0

THERE was derby delight for the Terras at the second time of asking against Dorset rivals Poole Town, as Jason Matthews’ side came out on top in the FA Trophy replay between the teams at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Goals from Chris Shephard and Stuart Fleetwood sealed what was a deserved victory for the home side, who more than matched their National League South opposition across the two ties.

The home team were without suspended duo Charlie Davis and Mark Cooper from the opening 1-1 draw between the two sides at Tatnam on Saturday.

Defender Ashley Wells also failed a fitness test ahead of the encounter but centre-half Stephane Zubar was passed fit to feature, despite not being 100 per cent.

Jake Wannell came in as defensive cover and operated alongside Zubar in the heart of the defence, meaning Calvin Brooks switched to right-back with Jordan Copp on the left of the back four. Billy Lowes came into the midfield and there was also a start for winger Aaron Rodriguez.

For the visitors, goalscorer from the weekend, Lewis Lindsay, was ruled out with a knee injury, meaning Will Spetch returned to the squad and went straight into the Dolphins’ starting XI.

The first chance of the contest fell on four minutes as the Terras gave possession away and the Dolphins broke through former Weymouth man Sam Surridge, but the AFC Bournemouth youngster, on loan at Tatnam, blazed over.

Poole’s Marvin Brooks then picked up the ball and drove an effort into the side netting on the angle, as the visitors showed their threat in the opening 15 minutes.

The first Terras’ opportunity then came as neat work from Rodriguez allowed the former Gillingham Town man to strike from the edge of the box but it was straight at Dolphins’ stopper Nick Hutchings, who made light work of the effort.

But, with their next sight at goal, Weymouth took the lead on 22 minutes.

A home throw from the right, which came after Poole boss Tom Killick disputed a call with the linesman, then resulted in the hosts fizzing the ball into the box from Fleetwood.

It was then teed up for Shephard, who drove into the far corner with Hutchings helpless, to put Matthews’ men ahead.

Just 10 minutes later, Poole came within inches of levelling the contest up.

A foul from Dean Evans allowed Steve Devlin the chance to line up a free-kick for the away side, he let fly with a curling effort which clipped the outside of the post.

As they did in the first encounter on Saturday, Poole found themselves with a number of set-piece opportunities around the Terras’ area, but the hosts stood firm until the interval to hold the advantage.

Poole then switched to a back three at the break as Ryan Case was replaced by Luke Roberts for the second half.

But the first real chance of the second period came to the Terras. Evans headed into the path of Fleetwood, who shanked his effort well side. Soon after, Matthews rushed off his line to deny ex-Terra Luke Burbidge on the angle at the other end.

In a derby contest that ebbed and flowed. it was the Terras who doubled their lead on 63 minutes.

A moment of brilliance from Copp saw him surge forward from left-back and continue his run into the box, his shot was saved but there was Fleetwood, who, after steadying himself, tapped home for 2-0.

With his side two goals to the good, boss Matthews, who was struggling with an arm injury before the game, then came off in place of fellow keeper Dan Thomas on 65 minutes. Poole also made a change with experienced hitman Richard Gillespie replacing Devlin.

But, after Thomas was forced into a sharp reaction save, it was the Terras who went for the kill and should have made it 3-0.

A sweeping ball found Shephard, who shifted the ball onto his right foot but, at the crucial moment, he smashed it over the top. More trickery from playmaker Shephard then allowed him to force a sharp save from Hutchings 10 minutes from time.

Surridge was then booked for simulation for the away side on what was a frustrating night for the young striker. Poole skipper Jamie Whisken then advanced forward to drive the ball across goal but wide, as Poole attempted one last rally.

But to was not to be as the Terras stayed resolute in the dying moments and booked their place in the first round proper of the competition, where they will visit Whitehawk.
