JASON Matthews was full of praise for the performance of young goalkeeper Tom McHale after he made his Terras’ debut on Saturday.

Having only signed a two-month loan deal the previous day, the Truro City gloveman was placed straight in the Weymouth starting XI by Matthews ahead of himself and Dan Thomas – the latter occupied a spot on the bench.

Asked about former Bodmin Town youngster McHale’s display, Matthews told Echosport: “I thought he had a really good debut and I think he had a positive impact on the game.

“He has played a lot of games at a high level and, for me, I feel he is a good signing. He has come in and is very hungry to do well.”

Matthews also spoke further on midfielder Chris Allen, who he revealed has agreed terms to join Weymouth from Chippenham Town, subject to paperwork.

He added: “I feel he can probably unlock some doors and is something a little different to what we have.

“On the whole I think all the central midfielders have had good seasons but are all quite similar. Hopefully Chris can come in and he has a bit of experience.

“With the amount of draws we find ourselves having in this run I need someone to come in and unlock the door a little bit.”
