JAKE Prentice, 10, scooped double gold at the Dorset Badminton Open, seeing off competition from some of England’s top under-11 players.

The Badminton England event took place at Harewood College.

Playing on his home court, Prentice beat Hampshire’s Michael Pang in straight sets to take gold in the singles.

The Dorset youngster and his partner, Daniel McMillan of Surrey, went on to win gold in the doubles as well.

Prentice, who lives in Mudeford and attends Mudeford Junior School, is a rising star on the national badminton circuit.

He began this season by winning the Under-11 Dorset Restricted, making him Dorset County Under-11 champion in both singles and doubles.

Since then he’s gone on to win three golds, four silvers and three bronze medals on the national circuit.

He’s currently ranked number five in England at under-11, and is hoping to improve on this over the remainder of the season.

He said: “I love badminton, and have done pretty well this season, including winning matches against the current England number two and three in tournaments.

“I want to be number one, but I’ll need to work really hard to do that.”

He currently trains five days a week with his coach, Helen Troke, and the Dorset County team.

His next big test will be the Under-11 England National Championships, which take place in Essex on March 29.
