Has commercialisation completely swamped forever the real meaning of Christmas?

People who were brought up in the post-war years yearn for a return to that period even though they had to endure many hardships.

On one day recently three people, who lived during that time, told me that they actually abhor what Christmas has become with the advertisements for the festive period starting in October and with everyone seemingly having a surfeit of food, drink and gifts; whereas they had great joy in finding a tangerine and a bar of chocolate among items in their Santa stockings and opening their one present before they set off for church.
