Once upon a time the General Post Office (GPO) was an important body. It had imposing buildings in every town and city centre. It handled post, telephones and communications of all kinds and many state functions.
But under Tory governments the juicy bits were privatised, first of all with British Telecom. Then the Royal Mail postal system was sold off, and is no longer “Royal”.
They have been trying to dispose of the remaining not very sexy bits, the Post Office counters for years. This is why the old post office buildings were closed and the service off-loaded onto any general store that would have them.
Hence more neglect of a vital public service. What do you expect ?
