The problem of the traffic gridlock along the Esplanade has been caused, quite simply, by the removal of the traffic island and the installation of traffic lights at the junction with King Street.

When the lights turn red, the traffic has to stop, and the jams build up.

If the traffic lights were removed, and a roundabout re-installed, then when the King Street traffic came to a standstill, the northbound traffic along the Esplanade could still continue through the northbound lane on the roundabout - as it always used to.
