YOUR article on power (‘Winds of change in energy sector’, Echo October 15) muddles power and energy by quoting a figure of some 330,000 megawatts per hour. Power is measured in megawatts but energy is megawatt-hours (Mwh).
More importantly, the article completely misses out the reason for increasing renewables, which is to reduce carbon emissions and limit global warming. Last year some 43% of electricity generation was from fossil fuels, 49% from zero-carbon ( including 27% from wind, solar and hydro, and 17% nuclear) and 8% imported.
The problem with wind and solar is that they are intermittent, but nuclear can provide a valuable zero-carbon source when required.
In the past Dorset provided much valuable R&D on nuclear power at AEE Winfrith.
