PHOTOS show the construction of Portland’s new petrol station ahead of its opening this Summer – with Greggs set to open its first branch on the island.

Dorset Council approved plans in March to build a new Shell petrol station along with a shop, takeaway, car wash, electric vehicle charging points off Coode Way.

The Shell petrol station will contain a Budgen’s supermarket, its first branch in the local area, as well as a new Greggs.

The site is bounded by Portland Beach Road, Coode Way and Mereside, just off the existing mid-way roundabout on the beach road – opposite the O’Three wetsuit business.

The operator will be Falcon Retail Ltd, who describe themselves as a small independent fuel/retail operator with four other sites in the South West, namely Gillingham in Dorset, Frome and Bridgwater in Somerset and Trowbridge in Wiltshire.

A spokesman for Falcon Retail Ltd confirmed the new petrol station will open on Thursday, August 12.

He said: “Falcon Retail Ltd, is scheduled to open this new Shell forecourt, Budgen’s mini supermarket and Greggs bakery on Thursday, August 12 this year.”

The new development will generate up to 30 jobs with a mixture of full and part-time roles, bosses say.

Construction of the petrol station on the derelict Portland site commenced in April, with multiple construction vehicles currently laying the foundations for the new forecourt.

The site is already being flattened and the structure of the petrol station’s building has already been built. Underground fuel tanks have been installed and were seen being lowered into the ground by large cranes.

The petrol station will have four two-sided fuel dispensers, offering Shell’s branded V-power diesel and petrol fuels.

While construction continues on Portland’s latest petrol station, Forelle Estates has submitted another planning application to alter the approved plans and share more detail about the development.

The new application shows that the new Budgen’s and Greggs branches would be based within the new petrol station and customers will enter the supermarket to pay for their fuel or to purchase some shopping.

The new Greggs will be split into two, with a store selling hot and cold food and drink with a small indoor seating area while the other half is its kitchen and a drive-thru hatch.

The planning application is currently accepting comments from residents and businesses. You can view the plans on Dorset Council’s planning search portal with reference P/FUL/2021/01320
