THE finishing touches are being made to Portland’s new petrol station ahead of its grand opening next week – with Greggs set to open its first island branch at the site and 30 jobs being created.

Dorset Council approved plans in March to build a new Shell petrol station along with a shop, takeaway, car wash, electric vehicle charging points off Coode Way.

The Shell petrol station will contain a Budgens supermarket, its first branch in the local area, as well as a new Greggs drive-through.

The site, which has been derelict for several years, is bound by Portland Beach Road, Coode Way and Mereside, just off the existing mid-way roundabout on the beach road.

The operator will be Falcon Retail Ltd, which describes itself as a small independent fuel/retail operator with four other sites in the South West, namely Gillingham in Dorset, Frome and Bridgwater in Somerset and Trowbridge in Wiltshire.

A spokesman for Falcon Retail Ltd previously confirmed the new petrol station will open on Thursday, August 12.

He said: “Falcon Retail Ltd, is scheduled to open this new Shell forecourt, Budgens mini supermarket and Greggs bakery on Thursday, August 12 this year.”

The new development will generate up to 30 jobs with a mixture of full and part-time roles, bosses say.

Construction of the petrol station on the derelict Portland site commenced in April, with multiple construction vehicles currently laying the foundations for the new forecourt.

The petrol station will have four two-sided fuel dispensers, offering Shell’s branded V-power diesel and petrol fuels.

Inside the Budgens will be a Costa Express machine while a new Greggs drive-through will also open.

The new Greggs will be split into two, with a store selling hot and cold food and drink with a small indoor seating area while the other half is its kitchen and a drive-through hatch.

Construction workers are currently making the finishing touches to the site, with one employee seen checking and testing the car wash facilities.

Large banners have been erected around the site, with one advertising jobs at Greggs and Budgens.
