WEYMOUTH will not sit back to “keep the score down” in a friendly against European champions Chelsea tomorrow (12.30pm).

Brian Stock’s troops will face the newly-crowned UEFA Super Cup champions at the Premier League side’s state-of-the-art Cobham training facility behind closed doors.

The fixture serves as extra match time for Chelsea’s first-team stars short of minutes, plus those who did not play a part in the Crystal Palace fixture 23 hours earlier.

With Chelsea overwhelming favourites for the contest, Stock admitted the Terras will not park the bus in their final pre-season warm-up.

“I think it’s important we try and impose ourselves on them,” he told Echosport.

“What I don’t want to be is the team that just sits back and tries to keep the score down.

“This isn’t about winning a game of football. This is about preparing for the week ahead.

“If we understand we can get a high level of fitness chasing the ball, if I’m being honest, given the quality we’re up against, it’s going to be a great test for the players.

“And, probably an occasion that will last long in the memory of some of those players that have not been exposed to this level of football and the facilities we’ll go and play at.

“We’ll be up against international footballers – it’s an exciting time. The only downside is we can’t share this with everyone else and it has to be behind closed doors.

“That’s unfortunately what Chelsea wanted but fully understandable at the same time.

“They just don’t want too much exposure, players coming back and probably a few things they want to do.

“We did try to have it at our place, but logistically it didn’t suit the club.

“When Chelsea come calling for a friendly, you basically fit yourself around them and the fact we can build a connection whether in loans or a potential friendly in the future.

“That would be a real plus for Weymouth.”

Asked if he would look to establish a working relationship between the sides, Stock played those hopes down.

“I wouldn’t say that’s my motive behind the friendly,” he said.

“We needed a friendly, otherwise we’d have gone two weeks before we kicked another ball.

“Hopefully they’ll see what sort of football we’re trying to achieve. Building up a connection always helps and having first contacts with people at the club.

“Chelsea have a very rich youth policy and their 23s I’ve seen in action, some of the players are phenomenal. They have one of the best setups in the country.

“For them to be able to trust us with their players would be a massive boost for this club.

“The success last year with Dom Revan from Aston Villa speaks volumes of what we can bring to players who come to the club.

“With Chelsea, the connection and the way we go about our business, hopefully that will shine through.”

Weymouth begin their National League season on Saturday, August 21 at home to Boreham Wood.
