ALMOST 300 riders are revving up for one of south Dorset's most high-octane events as Weymouth Beach Motocross returns next weekend.

Huge crowds are expected as a total of 269 riders across different racing categories will put pedal to the metal - negotiating a course of jumps and bumps along the beach.

The extravaganza is a joint operation between Weymouth & Portland Lions Club (WPLC) and Purbeck Motocross Club (PMC), with PMC president Alf Stearn describing the upcoming event as a 'resurrection' after it was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Stearn said: "There will be 269 riders in total as well as 50 volunteers to marshal the huge crowds we're expecting.

"It's brilliant to be back - it's like a resurrection and the support we've received from Weymouth Town Council and the public has been fantastic.

"We've organised this event in three months, while usually we would have a year of planning."

The event, which will see the transformation of Weymouth Beach into a motocross course, is usually a welcome economy boost in the quieter months after the main summer season.

There will be three classes of riders taking part this year including expert, senior and junior - with each class having two races on the day. A few professional riders are also expected to take part.

Lions president Kevin Brookes said: "Weymouth Beach Motocross first started in 1984 and has been run every year since then except for 2009 when the medical company didn’t turn up, and 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.

"It’s a brilliant event and l urge as many people as possible to come along to see and hear this spectacular event."

“We would also like to thank businesses that have supported this event through advertising, Weymouth Town Council for supporting the event again this year and We Are Weymouth for being our headline sponsor."

The event will be held on Sunday, October 10 - with bikes entering the sands from at noon for practise laps. There will also be a demonstration on Saturday, October 9 from 3pm.

Road closure

From 8am until 5pm on Sunday, October 10 all vehicles will be prohibited from driving along part of The Esplanade and part of Custom House Quay in both directions.

The road fronting Devonshire Buildings will be open for access only. Traffic will be re-routed through the one-way system around Alexandra Gardens to continue on The Esplanade, or road users can use Pilgrims Way for access to Custom House Quay.

Dorset Council has issued a Notice under Section 14 [2] of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984. The Notice is valid for a maximum of five days and is required to facilitate the arrangements in connection with the Weymouth Beach Motocross event.
