A PLAYPARK has been ‘saved’ following a campaign by local residents.

Councillor Louie O’Leary, who spearheaded the campaign, said the Littlemoor community was “very pleased” with the outcome and praised the “tremendous effort” of the Clayton Close residents.

As reported, Aster Group - the housing association responsible for the playpark - was said to be considering the removal of the park after receiving complaints of anti-social behaviour.

Local residents demonstrated their disapproval by gathering in the park to voice their opposition.

Aster has now confirmed the park will “remain as it is” following a “thorough consultation with residents”.

Aster said: “During the door knock exercise a number of residents reported inappropriate ages of children using the park during the evening which included drinking alcohol and throwing bottles over the bank towards the properties in Beverley Road.

“However, very few had reported their concerns to the police. We have suggested to residents they must report anti-social behaviour to the police and Aster’s ASB team in future, this enables us to make proportionate decisions which are evidence based.

“From speaking to residents it was clear that a significant number of families felt that a local play facility for the very young children was of benefit, hence the recommendation to retain the play park.

“We feel this is the most satisfactory outcome for the local community.”

Cllr O’Leary welcomed the announcement and said: “I think the right decision has been reached and it’s obviously very pleasing for all involved.

“Parks are absolutely crucial for young people and, actually, more important than ever before given the impact of the past couple of years. It’s so important that young people are able to benefit from being outside, staying active, and having the opportunity to socialise in a safe space.”

Cllr O’Leary also said he hoped the decision to keep the park open could prompt renewed investment in the facilities from the housing association.

He said: “Aster has invested a lot in repainting a number of facilities in the area and it would be great to see them invest in Clayton Close to ensure it remains welcoming and well used.”
