Frozen food shop Iceland is to open a new outlet in Weymouth town centre almost a year after it closed its high street store.

The Range in New Bond Street has announced that part of its store will be refurbished to include an Iceland.

The new venture, effectively a new department at The Range will open on Friday, July 21.

It will take up its own dedicated corner of the ground floor, making up more than 2,500 square feet of space.

The Range will remain open in the run-up to the new department's launch. The refit will be done outside of opening hours when suitable.

In September 2022 the Iceland supermarket in St Thomas Street, Weymouth closed its doors leaving shoppers 'shocked'.

This made the nearest option for Iceland shoppers the company's new offering, the Food Warehouse, at Jubilee Retail Park.

Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce President Paul Appleby welcomes the new store.

He said: "It is nice to see Iceland back on the high street. It is quite positive that they haven't abandoned the town.

"If they are offering supermarket things that is good for the locals who live within walking distance, but I suspect it will be grab-and-go food for tourists."

The Iceland department will be stocked and staffed by existing store staff.

A spokesperson for The Range said: "Iceland within Range stores is effectively a new department in the store, with the products being stocked by Range staff and products will be purchasable alongside your favourite products through the existing tills.

"Nothing will be replaced, some existing departments will be shuffled and resized to better serve customer demand.

"The department will be full of Iceland's freezer filling favourites from their own brand ranges through to exclusive brand products from iconic restaurants such as Chiquito, Greggs and TGI Fridays."

The move follows news that the Weymouth Marks & Spencer store on St Mary Street is planning to move to new premises outside the town centre at the Weymouth Gateway site.
