A SWAP SHOP which has prevented more than two tonnes of rubbish from being thrown away will return to Weymouth this weekend.

An event for people to swap unwanted items for free is dedicated to finding a new home for unwanted items.

Dorset Council Waste Service will return with their 'Give or Take Day' encouraging people to bring along anything that may be useful to someone else.

Visitors can browse among the items donated to see if there is anything they can make good use of.

The last four events, held in Weymouth and Crossways in the past 12 months, prevented 2.6 tonnes of items from being thrown away.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council Waste Services said: "Do you have items at home you no longer use? Or maybe you need some bits and pieces yourself? Swap the things you don't want, for the things you do, for free!"

Unwanted items can include furniture, clothing, kitchenware, tools, DVDs, toys and books.

Items not allowed include duvets and pillows, electricals, gas appliances and items in poor condition.

The event is free and you do not need to bring an item along to attend.

The next Give or Take Day will be hosted at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Chickerell Road in Weymouth on Saturday, October 21.

Items can be dropped off from 9am until 12pm with doors opening at 9.30am.

A spokesman for Dorset Council Waste Services said: "Reducing waste and reusing items is one of the best ways to help the environment.

"Where possible, items that are left at the end of the day will be saved for future events, donated to local charities, furniture reuse centres or recycled."

The Waste Services team has produced a Toolkit that gives guidance, samples of forms and notices to help people run their own Give or Take Day in their local area.

If there’s a community interested in hosting their own Give or Take Day, with support from Dorset Council’s Recycling Team, they can request a copy of the toolkit by emailing wasteteam@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk.
