'Nightmare' roadworks causing long delays through the centre of Bridport are set to continue until the end of the month.

ESP Electricity is installing cables for the Vearse Farm (Foundry Lea) development in Symondsbury, and this has had a knock-on effect on West Allington.

Work started on Monday, September 15, with two-way signal lights put in place at the junctions with Rendalls Walk and Magdalen Lane through to Sunday, October 5. Signs places either side of the temporary traffic lights stated this as the completion date.

However, residents and motorists woke up this Monday to find a four-way temporary light system in place at the roundabout near the White Lion.

According to the company responsible, ESP Electricity, the works are being carried out to lay ducting and cables for the 760 home Vearse Farm development.

A spokesperson for the works said that work will be carried out in other phases until Sunday, October 26, with work progressing along West Allington, St Swithun’s Road and Magdalen Lane.

The current lights have been a headache for drivers and those living along the route, with lights skipping quickly and causing tailbacks from the White Lion pub down to the town hall at the junction of South Street.

A spokesperson for ESP Electricity, said: “There are multiple phases of work being carried out to lay ducting and electricity cables to the Vearse Farm Development in Bridport.

“We do appreciate that roadworks such as this are an inconvenience to local residents and other travellers. We have asked our contractors to ensure the temporary traffic lights are phased correctly to avoid unnecessary delays.”

Separately, the A35 will close overnight from Monday between the Crown roundabout and Axminster for work by National Highways.
