MATT Cafer has described his first cap for Gibraltar as “a dream come true” as his side fell 4-0 to Macedonia in group D4 of the Nations League.

Cafer was also part of the team when they earned their first competitive victories last month, when they beat Armenia 1-0 and Liechtenstein 2-1.

Cafer said: “As cliché as it sounds it is a dream come true.

“After only being eligible from about June time, being involved for the whole of the Nations League tournament has been nice, it has been a great experience, especially after getting those two wins consecutively. I didn’t think anything would be able to top that.

“But then actually being able to make my debut in the last group game was fantastic for me.”

Reflecting on the historic moment of the two victories, the ex-Terras goalkeeper reflected on the huge achievement for the country.

Cafer said: “Even though I did not play in the two games that we won, just to be part of the squad, to play the role that I played was a fantastic achievement for me.

“Making my debut away from home against a massive country like Macedonia as well.

“They are massive, they have got a lot of big players that play in the Championship, Pandev (Goran, formerly of Napoli) didn’t play but he is quite renowned.”

Despite losing 4-0 Cafer credited his teammates for not getting turned over and not getting embarrassed, despite the country’s tiny population.

Cafer said: “Words cannot be put to describe the pride I felt stepping out onto the pitch.

“Especially in the first half it was a very busy period for me. I think overall they had 36 shots, maybe 11 on target, we were penned in a bit.

“We are only a small nation Gibraltar, we have a population of about 32,000.

“All credit to the lads, we have not been spanked seven, eight or nine nil by anyone. We have not been embarrassed, we have given it our all.”

“We have made footballing history, which for a country like Gibraltar is fantastic, it is an amazing achievement and thoroughly deserved.

“I know obviously there are a lot of mixed emotions about the competition back in England. Don’t get me wrong, beforehand the lads were playing against the big teams like Belgium, like Germany but as good as they are, the novelty of it wears off a little bit and people want to play competitive games.

Gibraltar have moved up nine places in the FIFA rankings as a result.
