WEYMOUTH 2

Thomson 45+2, Wakefield 63

TIVERTON TOWN 1

Price 80

GOALS from Ben Thomson and Josh Wakefield ensured Weymouth cruised to an eventually comfortable 2-1 win at home to Tiverton Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

It seemed Weymouth were cruising at 2-0 up, yet Jamie Price’s 80th-minute goal made it nervous times for the Terras late on.

Weymouth made three changes as Ashley Wells, Jordan Ngalo and Yemi Odubade came in for Tiago Sa, Abdulai Baggie and Brandon Goodship, the latter of whom was absent from the squad with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Tivvy could boast ex-Terras legend Stewart Yetton in their starting line-up.

It was a quiet start to the match, with a substitution the first action of note.

Tivvy’s Tom Gardner badly hurt his arm after three minutes, leading to his substitution three minutes later.

The time taken by Gardner prompted harsh calls against him from the crowd, with the Tivvy man holding his arm limply and clearly in some pain. He was later taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.

In the early stages the match was end-to-end without any final product to speak of.

However, the game got the chance it had been missing after 16 minutes, which Weymouth should have scored.

Calvin Brooks did well to break up play from Tiverton and get forward, cutting inside.

Brooks then slipped a ball into Wakefield, who could only snatch at the ball, before forcing Armstrong into a good, low save at the second attempt.

Wakefield was at the centre of most of Weymouth’s early efforts, barring a great curling strike from Josh Carmichael, which was straight down the throat of Liam Armstrong.

In the 26th minute, Brooks again set up Wakefield, who curled an effort in, but which Armstrong was equal to.

Levi Landricombe whipped in a shot that was high and wide, while Yetton struck a shot that was easily blocked away, as the Yellows struggled to create any sort of meaningful chance.

However, Tivvy almost caught out Weymouth with a smart free-kick routine.

Steven Colwell smartly slid in a ball towards Yetton inside the box, yet his strike was blocked away to safety by McCarthy.

Tiverton again threatened when Levi Landricombe had a central free-kick 25 yards out which slammed against the wall, before his follow-up strike met the same fate.

Odubade had the best chance of the half late on however, when he met a Brooks’ cut-back but saw Armstrong equal to his shot.

An astute bit of managerial work from Mark Molesley then helped the Terras take the lead.

Molesley ordered Ngalo to get further forward prior to a free-kick, which was swung in, and McCarthy prodded a shot towards the top corner which Armstrong somehow saved.

Yet Ngalo, who had not moved from the corner, was then perfectly placed to swing the ball back in, which Thomson nodded home to hand the home side the lead.

The second half saw the Tivvy start brightly, with Thomas having to tip over the bar from a cross-cum-shot from Callum Hall.

Josh Carmichael then charged forward, skilfully got past a couple of players and laid the ball off to Thomson.

Thomson immediately repaid the favour and Carmichael’s effort from just outside of the box forced Armstrong into a good, low save.

Yet Weymouth would get their second goal in emphatic fashion.

Thomson got a nick on a ball into the box, but only sent it sideways, parallel to the goal which provoked a scramble in the box from which Wakefield pounced on the ball to blast it into the net and double the Terras’ lead.

Odubade then lifted a shot over the bar, a few minutes before he was replaced by Abdulai Baggie on what is potentially Odubade’s last appearance for Weymouth.

The game had slowed down and the visitors took advantage through Price. A ball was lofted into the Terras’ box, Lloyd Thomas failed to collect it, and Price was alert to loft the ball into the net.

However, that would be the last real action, as Weymouth held on to a well-earned three points.
