SOUTH Dorset Spurs hosted a fantastic legends evening with Paul Allen and Phil Beal, who both enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce about their careers.

Allen, a three-time FA Cup finalist, and a member of the Tottenham squad that won the 1991 cup, spoke of enjoying the nostalgia from these sorts of events.

Allen said: “I would not class myself as a legend (with) the likes of Phil and some of the other legends at Spurs, but like I say that is the nice thing that people want to remember to talk about, your career or teams you played in or characters that you played with and honours that you won domestically or in Phil’s case Europe as well.

“So that is the great thing about (the event) so I will learn a lot about Phil and some of the things that Phil discusses about players and former teammates.

“We all like a bit of nostalgia I think.”

Allen added: “For me as a player that is why I like listening to Phil and those players because for me growing up in 1970 not only was it a great time for football in England, it was for the England team and domestically as well.

“I love listening to stories about the 1970s, that was when I first started collecting my panini stickers!”

Throughout the evening Beal, who won the 1972 UEFA Cup with Tottenham hosted, while Allen spoke before taking a series of questions from those at the evening.

The fans group, who have hosted numerous legends events before, welcomed fans with a two-course meal at the Dolphin Hotel, with various games played beforehand to entertain the crowd.

Both Beal and Allen spoke of the pleasure of being able to meet the supporters and look back over their careers.

Beal said: “We do one or two of these Q&As and they are really enjoyable because you are meeting Spurs supporters who remember us when we used to play and for me it is going back 30 or 40 years ago so obviously it’s an honour to still be recognised and made a fuss of when you come to these sorts of places.”

Allen added: “Likewise, like Phil says it is quite nice to go back and be nostalgic over our careers and for people to actually remember those moments and the key moments throughout our careers so it is really enjoyable.”
