WEYMOUTH have announced a new partnership with marketing and advertising company Sporting Ads.

It is the latest commercial move by the Terras in a bid to close the financial gap to big-spending teams in the National League.

Sporting Ads will take a small percentage of all revenue generated from interested companies.

The company has also worked with south coast neighbours Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Speaking to Echosport, a Weymouth spokesperson said: “We had a meeting Christian Clayton (owner) about what he could do to help enhance our commercial revenue and outreach to businesses.

“Fundamentally, the club hasn’t earned masses of amounts of money (commercially) for quite some time.

“The costs of running a football club have gone up and we’ve had to take the difficult decision that if we want to sustain National League football we need to bring more revenue to the club.

“Not just revenue, but more attention and build the club’s profile as a National League club.

“When you go to a lot of the grounds in the National League clubs, a lot of the sponsors are well-known companies.

“Whilst we’d never lose sight of local businesses and how they’ve supported the club, we have to find a way to not only work with them but be open to building relationships over a bigger area.

“It’s not about who will give us the most money. It’s about exposure for the club, building commercial partnerships.

“We do recognise everyone who’s backed the club, particularly in the last 18 months, and we’ll be forever grateful.

“There will always be a place for local sponsorship of the club and we hope to build those relationships.

“There’s lots of commercial opportunities which will be rolled out in the coming weeks when plans are finalised and put in place.”

Clayton said: “I am delighted to be working with Weymouth FC and we hope to be able to help the club and the local business community towards building back a better future after the difficult 18 months or so that everyone has endured.”
