NEW Weymouth manager David Oldfield promised a flexible style of play as he begins life at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Oldfield on Tuesday joined the Terras on a two-and-a-half-year contract from National League South side Oxford City, leaving with the Hoops in fourth position.

Weymouth were cut seven points adrift of National League safety on Tuesday evening by Maidenhead’s surprise 3-2 win over title-chasing Chesterfield.

And while Oldfield recognised the need to entertain fans with a “progressive” style, he also emphasised the need for pragmatism with 23 games remaining to retain their status at non-League’s top table.

Speaking to Echosport after his unveiling as boss, he said: “We won’t have any particular style.

“We want to be as forward and progressive as we can but we need to be pragmatic and make the right decisions at the right time.

“It’s a work-in-progress. We need to make sure we are an absolute team, working together. That will give us half a chance of getting where we need to be.”

He added: “We want to progress going forward. I think it’s a sensible approach.

“We need to make sure we give ourselves the best chance we can on the pitch. I know that we’re getting questions about that longer-term plan and the potential of the club is imperative.

“But we need to make sure we’re focused and really concentrated on what we’re doing now.

“The longer term will look after itself but we’re very excited about joining all those factors together, all the real positives of Weymouth – the crowd, the enthusiasm from the players, their attitude and really trying to join everybody together to go forward.”
