WEYMOUTH boss David Oldfield insisted the Terras’ 1-1 draw at old enemies Yeovil Town was a “decent away point”.

Oldfield’s players marked his first derby as boss with a superlative first half in which they dominated the Glovers.

Early reward came in the form of Sean Shields’ fourth-minute goal, tucking home Josh McQuoid’s low ball across the box.

Yeovil improved in the second half and equalised when Tyler Cordner diverted Adi Yussuf’s drilled shot into the far corner for an own goal.

Weymouth’s Tom Bearwish and Yeovil’s Yussuf both missed gilt-edged chances in a storming second half as the sides played out their third 1-1 draw of the season.

Post-match, Oldfield said: “A very strong, competitive performance. We worked really hard, I think it was a close game.

“I think Yeovil are a good side, it’s a decent away point. We had a chance to maybe score a couple but I think they had some opportunities at the end as well.

“I’m very pleased and proud of the boys and the crowd, they were fantastic.

“Really, we managed to resist, too, at the end under some big pressure. That’s another small but definite step forward.”

Analysing debutant and new signing Manasse Mampala’s performance, Oldfield added: “I’m hoping he can add to us and I think he did.

“We always speak about the collective group and I always will. Within the collective group are the individuals and those boys need to really step up to the plate.

“It was a really good performance. We’d only just met (Mampala) before the game. He came in, worked, ran and really affected us. He did some really good things.”

Discussing Shields’ early goal, Oldfield continued: “It’s always nice, it came so early and there’s so long to go.

“I thought we did some really good things first half. Second half we were under some pressure and we had opportunities on the counter.

“We want to pass as well and the boys are very capable of that. But first things first, we need to be competitive and the players certainly were.”
