“IT’S too easy to score against us” was the painful message from Weymouth boss David Oldfield after a harrowing 5-0 loss at Altrincham.

Weymouth remain nine points adrift of Vanarama National League safety following their worst defeat since February 2015, a 7-2 thrashing by Chesham.

To the Terras’ credit, they did start quickly with three chances as Dan Smith twice worked keeper Steven Drench and Brandon Goodship also tested the Robins’ custodian inside 10 minutes.

But a tremendous Matty Kosylo double, his first goal a stupendous strike from 25 yards out wide, put the Terras 2-0 down 15 minutes in.

Head injuries for Cameron Murray and Dan Smith, which required stitches at full-time, plus an ankle injury for Harvey Bunker came either side of Jake Cooper’s header for 3-0.

And Ryan Colclough rounded off a gruesome half with a fine fourth as Alty’s attack fired on all cylinders.

Weymouth’s Omar Mussa and Goodship again kept Drench honest but there was to be no consolatory goal as Dan Mooney added a late fifth for Alty.

Speaking to Echosport, a bitterly disappointed Oldfield said: “It’s almost a bit contrite to say that we started fairly brightly.

“We showed an appetite to play and pass and we had some opportunities. But we don’t get it right often enough and certainly not in games to see us through difficult periods or to show resilience.

“It’s too easy to score against us as a collective group and there seems to me as though there’s a lot of effort and commitment in the group.

“But we are misguided in many things we do or try. It’s my responsibility and I’ll take responsibility.

“It’s my job to get us joined up in whatever we’re trying to do, whether we’re passing or not, pressing or not or making sure we’re on the same page.

“There is a lot of effort and commitment from the players.”
Oldfield thanked the 36 Weymouth fans who made the journey to Greater Manchester on what was a woeful night for the club.

“I spoke to the crowd after the game, so did the players,” he revealed.

“I tried very hard to show our appreciation. There were still people there at the end of the game supporting us in Altrincham on a cold Tuesday night.

“Outstanding support for Weymouth Football Club. We managed to speak to them and accept responsibility for it.

“The ones who were there and were not there deserve better. The boys are working, they do care, but it’s my responsibility to get us into a cohesive team.”

Oldfield paid credit to Altrincham but did feel the majority of the Robins’ goals were preventable.

He said: “We absolutely could do better for the goals. We need to make the right decisions or dig deeper where necessary.

“We always are learning and this is a big lesson from an Altrincham side that were too good for us. Lots of credit to Altrincham for that.”

Weymouth next travel to fellow strugglers Wealdstone on Saturday (3pm).
