DORCHESTER TOWN LADIES 1

Bagwell 9

WEYMOUTH Women took a huge step towards the Dorset Women’s League title as they defeated Dorchester Town Ladies 6-1.

The Terras’ eighth league victory in a row has now meant they could secure the championship should they beat Merley Cobham next weekend in a match due to be played at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

It was a nervy start for Weymouth though as Dorchester’s initial pressure paid off when Clare Bagwell opened the scoring with a looping header from a corner.

Dorchester then felt they should have had an opportunity to double their lead when a strong penalty appeal was waved away.

On 20 minutes Weymouth equalised and never looked back, ex-Charlton Athletic midfielder Kristina Manktelow showing a touch of class turning her marker on the edge of the area and then hammering the ball into the bottom corner.

Shortly after equalising the Terras found themselves in the lead, when Dani Ackerman’s initial corner was cleared Kayleigh Whiting picked the ball up on the edge of the centre circle and floated it in from 40 yards.

Jody Sapsford scored Weymouth’s third in the 34th minute, weaving past two Dorchester defenders before blasting past the Magpies’ keeper.

Two minutes later and Ackerman added a fourth for Weymouth, Manktelow’s superb backheel splitting the Dorchester defence and Ackerman hitting a powerful effort into the bottom corner.

Just before half-time Webber-Green added a fifth and again it was another backheel assist, this time from Charlie Wilson, she found the Terras’ forward who slotted in from 12 yards.

Weymouth added a sixth five minutes into the half when player-manager Tasha Sibley sent a deep cross into the Dorchester area which Ackerman toe-poked onto the post before unconventionally scoring the rebound with her hip.

Webber-Green was denied a seventh for offside before a goal-saving sliding-tackle from Emma Potter thwarted Dorchester’s hopes of a second goal.
