WEYMOUTH WOMEN 2

Beasley 27, Ackerman 59

WEYMOUTH Women pulled off their biggest victory to date last weekend when they progressed to the final of the Dorset County Cup at the expense of Poole Town Ladies.

Dorset League side Weymouth earned a 2-0 victory at the County Ground last Sunday over a Dolphins side who currently play three tiers higher in the Women’s National League. The result sets up a final with Sherborne Town Ladies at the County Ground on Thursday, May 5 (7.30pm).

The big games keep coming as Weymouth next face Merley Cobham at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (1pm) knowing that a victory would secure them the Dorset Women’s League title with two games to spare.

Weymouth started the semi-final tie brightly with Lily Beasley and Dani Ackerman both having early chances for the visitors, before Poole Town broke through the Terras defence only for a piece of heroic defending from Emma Potter preventing the Dolphins opening the scoring.

It was Weymouth who would strike first on 27 minutes through Beasley, she found herself on the end of a Kristina Manktelow through-ball and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Poole Town started the second-half strongly and pressed for an equaliser, the biggest chance coming from a deep corner which bounced around the Terras’ penalty area before it was eventually hooked clear.

But Weymouth were not deterred by Poole’s period of pressure and on 59 minutes they doubled their lead; Becca De Havilland searching pass split the Dolphins’ defence and Dani Ackerman rolled the ball past the keeper and in off the post.

The final half an hour saw Terras’ keeper Kate Osemnt called upon numerous times as Poole Town pressed for a way back into the game with a series of long-balls in the Weymouth penalty area, but each time the experienced shot-stopper was on hand to thwart the attacks.
