WEYMOUTH goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons backed the Terras’ fortunes to change and remains “confident we can get out of this mess”.

Fitzsimons helped keep a clean sheet on Saturday as Weymouth drew 0-0 against play-off contenders Grimsby Town.

It was the eighth point of the David Oldfield regime, following the 1-0 win over Eastleigh and four other draws.

However, Aldershot’s 2-1 victory over Boreham Wood widened the gap to safety to 11 points with only eight games remaining.

With the odds of survival in the National League lengthening, Fitzsimons revealed Weymouth’s squad retains an inner belief that they can escape the relegation zone.

He told Echosport: “Sometimes it’s something just as basic as a rub of the green.

“We had a few chances Saturday that didn’t go in but they had a few chances where Haji (Mnoga) has blocked a couple on the line or I’ve made a save.

“It might be one of those where we get a deflection and it goes in, or the rub of the green turns.

“With the performances and the hard work the boys are putting in, I’m confident we can get out of this mess.”

Fitzsimons has played 40 times for the Terras this season and was named Weymouth player of the month for March following a number of outstanding displays.

He said: “We’ve got a good group of lads and we’ve just got to keep going. The spirit’s high so we’ve got to keep moving forwards.

“I’ve been under a bit more pressure than what I would’ve liked but unfortunately that’s the situation I’ve been dealt.

“I do think quite positively and just deal with what’s in front of me.

“(Player of the month) was a nice moment but the situation we’re in doesn’t help, that does dim the light.

“But on a personal level I’m happy with where I’m at. It’s nice to put a run of games together and personal performances as well.”

He added: “This is a really tough league. No game’s easy in this league. The gaffer’s come in and he’s been unbelievable, he’s positive, assertive in what he does.

“You can tell he wants us to do well and it is starting to click. The performances are there or thereabouts and I’m sure we’ll turn it round.”

Fitzsimons counts National League giants Chesterfield and Notts County among his former clubs.

And the shot-stopper was quick to highlight how much he is enjoying life at Weymouth – despite the vast differences between his current and former employers.

“It is a bit different, I’m not going to deny that,” he admitted.

“The clubs I have been at are (previously) established Football League clubs. It is different coming down here but it’s another mental and physical challenge I’ve got to do deal with.

“For me going forward, it’s adding as many strings to my bow as I can. It’s a mental challenge being in a relegation battle.

“The size of the club is not as big but we get by. When you haven’t got that infrastructure and size, that’s when you need the lads.

“We stick together, the manager is positive and people are positive around the place. It’s a nice place to be and I’m enjoying every minute down here.”
