FORMER Weymouth goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons has signed a short-term contract with Gibraltarian side St Joseph’s, according to sources close to the deal.

Fitzsimons, 28, will play for the Saints across the duration of their Europa Conference League campaign.

St Joseph's, who were recently bought in a joint deal by ex-Burnley chairman and current Terras director Mark Palmer, also have an option to sign the keeper for the domestic season.

St Joseph’s begin their European quest with a first qualifying round clash at home to Northern Irish challengers Larne this evening (6pm).

The winners over two legs will go on to face Czech Republic giants Slavia Prague in the second qualifying round.

Should Fitzsimons make his debut for a team that finished third last season in the Gibraltar National League – the territory’s highest division – it would also be his European debut.

Speaking to Echosport, a source involved in the deal said: “He’s signed for St Joseph’s in the Europa Conference League.

“He’s bought into the vision and it’s extendable through the duration of the Europa campaign. It finishes if (St Joseph’s) get knocked out.”

Fitzsimons played 4,260 minutes in 47 appearances for the Terras last season before leaving in the summer.

He was on course to play every match of the 2021/22 campaign until a hip injury ruled him out of the final match at Dover, the Terras winning 2-1.

Ex-Notts County and Chesterfield custodian Fitzsimons was voted both supporters’ and players’ player of the year after a number of outstanding performances between the sticks.

Meanwhile, Weymouth are set to learn their 2022/23 National League South fixtures tomorrow morning.
