WEYMOUTH manager Bobby Wilkinson has dismissed the idea of his side’s Vanarama National League South contest at Chippenham Town being a six-pointer.

With Weymouth in 23rd and Chippenham 19th, kept apart by only six points, there may appear to be extra significance to the game.

However, Wilkinson cooled those suggestions and refused to get caught up in adding any weight to a fixture he reiterated is worth only three points.

Speaking to Echosport, he said: “You’ve got to keep working hard, keep sticking together.

“I’ll make this very clear, it doesn’t matter whatever the result is, we want to win the game but that doesn’t define if we stay up or down.

“It’s just three points. I keep hearing a lot of people saying it’s a six-pointer, when it’s three points.

“Let’s get back to reality. We want three points and we’re going to have to go there and work extremely hard to get them.

“It’s the next game. I’ve seen this happen too many times over the years where people put big things on games.

“It’s just a game of football, we would be extremely grateful if we win this one because it gets us closer to where we want to get.

“That is my experience coming through now. People hype these games up to make them bigger than what they are.”

Weymouth lost their last league outing 4-1 at Ebbsfleet but bounced back in midweek to beat rivals Dorchester Town 2-0 to reach the Dorset Senior Cup final.

Wilkinson added: “I’m not worried about Ebbsfleet, that’s gone now. I’m just really pleased with the win during the week.

“I’m fully focused on the job in hand and we’re ready to go to Chippenham and put on a good performance. That’s all that matters.

“Nothing else in the past matters, I’m not even worried about the cup final.”

One of Wilkinson’s priorities over the last two games has been to knit together a fresh-look defence containing new signings Luke Jenkins and Chris Francis.

Asked how he felt his new back four was shaping up, Wilkinson said: “It seemed quite well.

“It went quite well for 70 minutes on Saturday and then to keep a clean sheet on Tuesday against a very good side that are doing well in their league, that couldn’t have gone any better for us.

“We’ve just got to take that performance into Saturday.”

Both Wilkinson and assistant Mike Percival have discussed the possibility of new signings or loan exits in recent weeks.

Quizzed on the topic, Wilkinson said: “Nothing like that’s going on this week.

“All we’ve been focused on is Chippenham. Nothing else is going in or out of the door.”

Tom Bearwish and Scott Rees are fit to play after coming off with knocks against Dorchester.

Harry Kyprianou (hamstring) and Teddy Howe (knee) remain out but Ben Thomson and David Sesay (both ankle) could return to the squad.

Meanwhile, Oxford City loanee Charlie Rowan has had his collar bone surgery and Weymouth have not ruled out the possibility of him returning to the club when fit.
