WEYMOUTH have signed goalkeeper Hugo Fisher from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on a game-by-game basis.

Fisher, 19, has experience with Albion’s under-18 side and last played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea Under-18s two Saturdays ago.

He also kept a clean sheet last Tuesday for Albion's under-21s in a 3-0 defeat of Shoreham in the Sussex Transport Senior Cup.

Slovakia-born Fisher comes in on what is effectively a rolling deal due to a dislocated finger for first-choice keeper Gerard Benfield.

Callum Smalley, who impressed on his Weymouth debut on Saturday, and back-up Harry Dillon, are still in the reckoning although Wilkinson may choose to bolster his options further before Eastbourne on Saturday.

Speaking to Echosport, Wilkinson said Brighton’s under-21 goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo and under-21 boss Shannon Ruth had been instrumental in overseeing the arrangement.

“He’s highly-rated and the goalkeeping coach is a very good friend of mine,” he added.

“I personally thank Sal and Shannon at Brighton, I’ve known them for a while and worked with both of them.

“I can’t thank them enough for helping us out quite late on with an emergency loanee.”

On Fisher himself, Wilkinson said the teenage custodian is an “unbelievable shot-stopper”.

“He’s got great potential and a great future in the game,” Wilkinson added.

“He’s still learning his trade and it’s going to be great experience for him. He’s an unbelievable shot-stopper and a very good goalkeeper.

“They’re very pleased to loan him to Weymouth to work under me because I’ve taken some of their goalkeepers in the past, quite a few of them have played high up in the league.

“It’s one where it helps each other out.”
