GOALKEEPING hotshot Jameson Horlick believes his spell at Dorchester Town will take him to the next level, describing it as “bang on” for his career.

Horlick, 20, is on loan from Premier League side Luton Town and has impressed with his shot-stopping ability, calmness and distribution skills.

The London-based custodian has been training with the Hatters’ first-team squad, playing understudy to the likes of Thomas Kaminski and Tim Krul.

But he feels playing senior football each week with the Magpies has been equally beneficial to his progress, having only previously played on the under-21 scene.

Speaking to Echosport, Horlick said: “This is exactly what I needed, to get out and play men’s football.

“It’s all good playing 21s but with the number of games I’ve had here, I’ve learnt so much more here than I would playing at 21s level.

“I’ve really liked it, really enjoyed it so far. In terms of the club, it’s bang on what I needed and what I expected. The fans week in, week out are always giving their best.

“Up and down the country, there’s always people there. I feel like I play my best when I’m enjoying myself.

“Credit to the boys, I’ve come and they’ve welcomed me in with open arms. It’s a really good club and I’m happy to be here.”

After playing for Dorchester, Horlick returns to Luton to train with former Netherlands international Krul and Belgium squad member Kaminski.

On his experience rubbing shoulders with such high-calibre keepers, Horlick said: “Even to watch them in training, feed off them and pick their brains, it’s really good.

“I’m grateful for Luton giving me that opportunity. All of them have helped out in my career.

“I’ll take what I’ve learned here and I go back there and I can talk to them about it and they’re open. They give me their experience of what’s happened in their career.

“To be honest, it’s perfect for me.”

Asked how he bridges the gap between training with a Premier League team and playing for a side in the seventh division of English football, Horlick said: “It’s different, of course, but you’ve got to play the game.

“For a goalkeeper, the game stays the same. I’m getting shots here that I wouldn’t save whether it’s at this level or in the Prem.

“My job’s the same, regardless of the level, I’ve got to take what I’ve learned in training and try and apply myself.”

Horlick also highlighted the benefits of working with experienced Dorchester goalkeeping coach Steve Dodge.

“I remember speaking to a couple of the boys at Luton and talking about their experience at loans and non-League football,” Horlick recalled.

“The big thing is always the warm-up. You’re coming in here and you don’t know who’s doing the warm-up. It could be an outfield player.

“When you’re asking them to do half-volleys and volleys it can be a bit challenging, but I’ve come here and Dodge has been a big help.

“It’s good to talk to someone who’s played the game a little bit and has been around it.

“He’s always asking what Luton are saying to me. It’s good just to bounce ideas off everyone around me and pick as much as I can up.”

Horlick will have a major part to play for the Magpies as they aim to beat the Southern Premier South drop in the final month of the season.

“If we can take points where we can, it’s important to keep your feet on the ground, take it a game at a time almost,” he said.

“It’s looking good. That confidence you can feel in the changing room, feel it out on the pitch the way the boys are playing at the minute.

“It’s fearless, you’ve got each other’s backs.”
