Veteran striker Ian Henderson came off the bench to rescue a point for Rochdale with an 88th-minute leveller as they drew 2-2 with Grimsby.

The 41-year-old converted Charlie Tasker’s cross from close range at the end of a high-octane clash at the Crown Oil Arena.

The home side made the brighter start, Glenn Middleton’s shot being cleared off the line by Joe Foulkes.

Grimsby’s best effort of the half came from Charles Vernam, a fierce shot saved by Dale goalkeeper Sam Waller.

Rochdale took the lead in the 38th minute when Middleton got in behind the Mariners’ backline and fired an inviting cross to the back post where Dajaune Brown slid in and side-footed home.

Grimsby levelled in the 57th minute, Harvey Rodgers’ delivery to the back post picking out Andy Cook and though Waller saved his header, Kieran Green was there to nod home.

The visitors took the lead in the 72nd minute when Jamie Walker collected a partially-cleared corner and slammed a low shot through a crowded penalty, but Henderson denied the Mariners victory with a poacher’s finish.
