HOW times have changed. Many years ago the foyer at the Palace Cinema was merely a place to queue for tickets to see the latest blockbuster.

Now it has been transformed into a plush eaterie.

With comfy sofas and stylish/retro décor The Electric Palace Café is now home to the ‘Palace Burger’.

All of their burgers are made with 100 per cent local quality beef and there is a wide range of burgers on offer to tempt any palette.

The menu is presented on a large chalk board and includes a variety of burgers from avocado bacon burger to veggie burgers. There are also smaller burgers for children, extra fillings such as humus and roasted red peppers, side orders of skinny fries and onion rings and dipping sauces.

There is an extensive drinks’ menu including Fairtrade teas, organic coffee and organic ginger beer and lemonade as well as alcoholic beverages.

We ordered and paid at the bar and made ourselves comfortable enjoying the jazzy background music. Our drinks arrived quickly although my friend’s coffee could have been warmer.

We decided to order salads as a starter with burgers to follow.

I chose the Greek salad, which was delicious. It was piled high with crumbly feta cheese and stacks of black olives.

My friend ordered the rocket and Parmesan salad, which she also thoroughly enjoyed. She was impressed with the quantity of freshly shaved Parmesan and the balsamic dressing.

When our burgers arrived they were well presented, stacked high with layers of salad, dressings and relish.

I ordered the Cajun burger which had a creamy smoked chilli mayonnaise and spicy Cajun relish. The home-made burger was very tasty, noticeably different from a shop bought processed burger.

My friend chose the avocado bacon burger, which she enjoyed although it was a bit crispy around the edges.

We both felt that the burgers and rolls could have been a bit bigger and although chips were available as a side order we felt that they should have come as part of the meal.

So if it’s a burger you’re after, or a light lunch in a hurry, the Electric Palace Café is worth a visit.
