ENJOY a bloody great Valentine’s weekend as haunting musicians Solarference accompany the 1920s classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at Dorchester Arts Centre tomorrow and Bridport Arts Centre on Saturday.

Solarference are made up of duo Nick Janaway and Sarah Owen who perform with voices, laptops, instruments and sound objects.

Every sonic detail of a performance is crafted and created live as they weave layers of sound, improvising and responding together – the music is born purely of the moment and place.

Their performances are interactive and theatrical, fascinating live experiences.

Drawing on traditional folk song and found sounds, Solarference create sublime and mysterious music, a perfect complement to this iconic film’s shadowy magic.

Solarference is a chilling and highly inventive show to accompany the screening of John S Robertson’s 1920 film Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, starring John Barrymore as the split personality Victorian scientist. Improvised with homemade software, they conjure an edgy other worldliness that has to be witnessed, anticipating and reacting to the unfolding scenes of the film.

All the sounds the audience will hear are created live during the performance – utilising voices, laptops, instruments and a diversity of sampled sound objects – so no two performances will be the same.

Nick said: “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an amazing film and we are so lucky to be working with it. The music we make is otherworldy and atmospheric and creates an eerie atmosphere that works perfectly with the film. The film doesn’t have a soundtrack so we simply add to it.

“I don’t see it as a responsibility, more like a real gift that we can use for this. This film is enough for us to be going on with, but we are keen to work on others in the future.”

He added: “Nothing is pre-recorded, so if you see us making a sound on stage, we are actually making it.”

In the second part of the show, Solarference will perform songs from their album Lips of Clay.

The Dorchester performance is at 8pm – call 01305 266926 for tickets and full details – and the Bridport show is also at 8pm – call 01308 424204.
