THIS week in gigland we welcome back three hugely accomplished players and for three rather different reasons.

First up then is guitar ace Jon Storey, at one time a permanent fixture on the circuit round these parts with such massively popular bands as Blue Job and Bad Reputation, until he packed up his plectrums, upped Strats and Mesa Boogied (gee, this stuff writes itself, you know) off to sunny Spain to ply his not inconsiderable nift.

As Jon tells me: “I’ll be playing blues rock, with some classic blues revamped and mixed with rocket fuel and quite a bit of my own material written during my recent time in Spain.

“I’m constantly gigging over there and in Portugal with my Spanish band, playing rock clubs, biker clubs, festivals and the like.”

He’ll be joined on this weekend’s short tour of south Dorset by Nick Skelson on bass, who previously played with top Rory Gallagher tribute band Sinnerboy, and Chrissy ‘De Roxx’ Whiteside who will be sveltly slipping out of the lycra catsuit worn as frontman of Big Gunz to reprise his role as the world’s tallest drummer.

You can catch Jon and his band at Finns in Weymouth tonight, Friday, March 20, at the King’s Arms in Weymouth on Saturday, March 21 and there’s a double-bubble on Sunday, March 22, with a gig at the Wyke Smugglers at 4pm, followed by a quick hike north for the Three Compasses at Charminster for 9pm.

“Then we’re off to Wales and the Midlands for more dates, this time with Gwyn Ashton’s drummer Damien Williams on board, before heading back to Europe for the festival season,” Jon adds.

Now then, I’m pretty confident the closest most readers of this column get to a bit of culture is when they finally scrape out the mould growing in that tea cup by the side of their bed, so it’s a warm welcome back to Swedish-born classical guitarist and composer Johannes Moller, who returns to the scene of his 2014 Dorchester festival triumph with a date at the town’s Arts Centre on Sunday, March 22, at 3pm.

Look, you don’t need an oaf like me to tell you that this guy is the real deal. He’s coming here off the back of tours of India and China, has dates across Europe in April and May, then it’s Australia, America and Canada and has got awards, bachelorates and masters degrees coming out of his soundhole. Please note that the gig starts at three o’clock in the afternoon, so some of you will have to get up a bit earlier. Tickets are £12.

And finally, it’s a huge welcome back to drummer Grant Holford who takes his place behind the kit with Tripod at Finns on Saturday, March 21, for his first gig since a year-long battle with lymphoblastic leaukaemia.

As you can imagine, Grant’s had a flipping tough time recently but it’s great to see him back in action thumping his tubs and I’m sure Finns will be rammed tomorrow night for what will be an emotional and brilliant night.

Good work fellah!

Till next time…
