AN Olivier-nominated performance celebrating the late great comedian Eric Morecambe can be seen tonight and tomorrow at Lighthouse in Poole.

Bob Golding is portraying the man who brought us sunshine in this new production of the West End hit Morecambe.

In 2014 to mark the 30th anniversary of Morecambe’s passing, a brand new production of the Olivier award winning West End play that celebrates the life of the man who played all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order, is touring across the country.

From Morecambe Pier to ‘André Preview’, from the last days of music-hall to Glenda Jackson, Morecambe offers a moving and gloriously funny portrait of the affectionate lad with the funny bones, the big-hearted perfectionist, the born entertainer.

This new production of Tim Whitnall’s hit show once again stars Bob Golding who was nominated in the Olivier Award Best Actor in an Entertainment category for his extraordinary portrayal of the man who brought us sunshine.

It is directed by Paul Hendy and designed by Julia Bunce.

Bob has an encyclopedic knowledge of Morecambe and Wise and of other comedy of the era and is also known for his roles in Mr Selfridge, Watson and Oliver and as Grandpa in the children’s TV series The Tweenies.

He said: “I was a huge fan of Eric’s. I’m a British comedy geek, and you can’t be a fan of British comedy without being a fan of Morecambe and Wise.

“Watching Morecambe and Wise, you were guaranteed laughs. Their act was silly, and we Brits really like silly.”

He said the play works so well because it’s not just about Eric.

“I play 55 different characters. I play Eric and everyone else in his life.

“That gives the show real pace and energy. It’s also a complete pleasure to perform.

“I did 260 performances of this show a few years ago, but this is a completely new production with a new director. It’s lovely to be back,” he said.

Tickets for the Poole performances are £19.50 each and can be bought from lighthousepoole.co.uk.
