AN INTERESTING connection between Weymouth and the US has been brought to our attention.

Edward McBride of Stonehill Court has written in to take us back to 1944 when Weymouth was full of American troops in preparation for D-Day.

At the same time there was an American Forces Club existing in the resort that was run by a Miss McLaughlin.

She ended up working in the US at Berea College in Kentucky, US, pictured, which was the south’s first racially integrated and coeducational college founded by the abolitionist John Gregg in 1855.

Its motto is: ‘God was made of one blood. All peoples of the earth.’

Does anyone remember anything about the American Forces Club and Miss McLaughlin when she was in Weymouth or know anything about her time at Berea College?
