CHICKERELL United have announced Garry Mowlam as their new manager after Shaun Murphy exited the Chickens with “immediate effect”.

Murphy was at The Stalls as permanent boss for six years, taking over from Steve Coward for the beginning of the 2017/18 season, but was involved for more than two decades in various roles.

The Chickens’ boss secured a runners-up placing in his first campaign, finishing seven points behind eventual winners Corfe Castle.

Murphy also led Chickerell to the post-Covid Dorset Senior League Cup final in 2021, before losing 7-2 to Sturminster Marshall.

In a statement on social media, Chickerell said: “The club would like to thank Shaun for his involvement in the club spanning over two decades, from playing to coaching and finally leading the first team.

“Shaun’s hard work has been greatly appreciated and has resulted in some real highlights for this club, a Senior League runners-up medal in his first year and a place in a cup final to name a couple.”

Chickerell finished seventh of the 11 teams in the Dorset Senior League last season, with Mowlam now tasked with keeping the Chickens in the division.

Chickerell have lost several key players over the summer, including Dylan Ellis to Dorchester Sports.

Balti Sports have also agreed terms with Jack Critchell, James Hansford and Derek Wall this summer as the Weymouth side rebuilds for the Dorset Premier League season.

Hinting at a busy summer ahead, Chickerell added: “The club is working hard to maintain the strength and position we have held in the Senior League for many years.”
