WEYMOUTH manager Bobby Wilkinson believes the 2-0 win at play-off chasers Aveley will go down as one of the best results of the Terras’ season.

Weymouth got their gameplan spot on against the Millers, stacking their midfield and front line with attacking options to nullify Aveley’s threat out wide.

And after a goalless first half in which Malachi Linton clipped the outside of the post, the Yeovil loanee punished two defensive errors from the hosts to give Weymouth all three points.

The victory moved Weymouth up to 15th, with the Terras now only two points off last season’s tally of 48 with 10 games still to play.

Speaking to Echosport, Wilkinson spoke of his delight after the final whistle.

He said: “The boys put in a brilliant shift for me. We got it right and it was a special day for the club.

“We’ve gone there and kept a clean sheet and won 2-0, which is an unbelievable result. It’s up there with one of the best results of the season.

“Everything we set out, it worked. You don’t get these days that often, I’m so pleased.

“Collectively, the management team and players have been brilliant. You don’t win away games like this unless it’s one group.”

Weymouth were bang on the money from the first whistle, setting the tone for a superb win.

“First 25 minutes we were electric,” Wilkinson insisted.

“Lots of energy, played in the right areas, some brilliant football at times which was really nice to watch.

“Some passing and slick moves, get it out wide and then into the box. We should’ve gone in 2-0 up.

“Away from home, 0-0 at half-time you’d take that as well. We said to them to stay on the front foot, keep the pitch compact so they don’t break on us.

“Let’s give them credit, they’re a good side, just outside the play-offs. But they met a Weymouth team that were very organised and passionate to win.”

Elaborating on the gameplan, Wilkinson added: “I went with a gameplan and it worked.

“I knew their full-backs like to bomb on, so we didn’t play our two number 10s out wide, we played them inside.

“Even if I had the midfield that normally plays, this would’ve been what we went with. Too many teams shows this club too much respect. We didn’t, we went to win.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was a gamble but as a group it worked.”

Finally, with Linton now on five goals in 11 appearances since his move to Weymouth, Wilkinson added: “He’s been a credit to work with, we’re lucky to have him.

“Since he’s come in, I’ve enjoyed working with him. Hard work gets you rewarded, I make that very clear. He works harder than anyone I’ve managed. A lot of credit goes to him.”

Weymouth next travel to the neutral venue of Taunton Town to face Truro City tomorrow (7.45pm).
