NEIGHBOURS have spoken of how they heard ‘shouting and screaming’ and loud music coming from a house in Weymouth hours before armed police swooped on the property to deal with a man who had a hammer and a knife.
Police were called to the property in Howard Close, Wyke Regis yesterday morning following reports of a disturbance.
Around 20 police officers, including armed officers and negotiators, surrounded the property yesterday following reports that a man had assaulted two people.
The man then locked himself in the house and was reportedly armed with a knife and a hammer.
There was no one else in the property.
The road was cordoned off and multiple police vehicles were at the scene.
After a stand-off lasting nearly three hours, a man was brought out of the house after officers broke a window and stormed the property.
Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of assault, making threats to kill and affray and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
A spokesman for Dorset Police: "Dorset Police received a report at 7.35am of a disturbance on Howard Close in Weymouth.
"Two people were reportedly assaulted by a man. They did not sustain any serious injuries.
"It was reported that the man – who was in possession of a knife and hammer – was inside a property. There was nobody else inside the address.
"Officers attended the scene and engaged with the man to resolve the incident safely."
Police said at around 10.45am a man was arrested on suspicion of assault, making threats to kill and affray and is currently assisting officers with their enquiries.
The force said the arrested man and the victims are known to each other.
After a man had been arrested, police officers at the scene said they were pleased the situation had come to a 'safe and peaceful conclusion and no one got hurt'.
Housing association Aster Group owns the house that the police were waiting outside of. A spokesman for Aster said: "We’ve been made aware of an incident at a property in Howard Close, Weymouth and we are working closely with the police as they carry out their investigations.
"While the enquiry is ongoing we are unable to comment any further at this time."
From early yesterday morning, neighbours were gathered at the end of the street, which had been cordoned off, to see what was going on as more than 10 police cars came and went.
A neighbour, who lives at the end of the road, said: "It all started at about 5am when blaring music was heard. Then it all started kicking off and people could hear shouting and screaming.
"Police arrived at about 8am and I heard them shout "taser, taser, taser".
Police later confirmed that a taser was not deployed.
Another neighbour, whose house backs onto the house where the man was residing, said: "I could hear a lot of screaming at about 7.30am and I didn't know what was going on. I could hear it echoing over into my house."
After a man had been arrested, another neighbour said: "I am relieved that the situation is over.
"Drum and bass music was blaring at around 5am and then the screaming started at about 7am so it has been an eventful morning.
"I am just pleased that it has been resolved peacefully and I hope nothing like this happens again."
